One of the most interesting tours we went on at Alice Springs was of the School of Air. This center is how children living in settlements in Central Australia get educated. Because they grow up in such isolation, it isn’t possible for them to learn in a stand school and to get teachers out to them. Instead, they learn through radio emissions and, now, internet broadcasts. At the Alice Springs School of Air, you get to see some of the recorded lessons and an overview of what a school day is like for the kids living in the outback. There are some really interesting observances as to how these children differ from other children who are in a more standard educational environment. My kids also thought that the program was really interesting and want to learn via webcam now. The School of Air is located north of downtown Alice Springs. It is best to go there in the morning so you can see the actual broadcasts going on. The Visitor Centre is located north of the town, 3.5kms from the Post Office at 80 Head Street, Alice Springs.
