 Besakih Temple, Indonesia’s Hindu temples are the main organs of the country’s culture. You need to take the time to visit some of the amazing old temples while you are in Bali. Chances are that you will find temples without even looking for them. While you go on scenic walks through Ubud or along the beach paths, you often end up at a quiet and peaceful temple. There are several large and very important temples in Bali which should not be missed. If you are only going to visit one of these, it should be Besakih Temple. Besakih is referred to as the mother temple in Bali. It is the biggest temple in Bali and contains five different compounds which are located around the main temple which are representations of the holy directions. Throughout these, there are ten clan temples. These are for ancestor worship and are used on different days of the week. Besakih is located on the east side of Bali along Mt Agung. From its place on the highest mount in Bali, you can see an amazing panorama of nature going out into the ocean. Besakih Temple is going to be included in the World Cultural Heritage List. This temple is distinct among the temples in Bali because it is so old. You can see evidence of beliefs from pre-Hindu times such as ancestor and deity worship. There are large ancient stones going as far back as the megalith era. This temple really unites the different castes of Bali which can be seen worshipping here. The temple is open to tourism and a very popular attraction in Bali. You can drive there yourself or take a shuttle bus. It is about a 2 hours drive from the airport and located in Besakih Village. There are several tours you can join which will take you to the temple and other places of interest along the way.
