Buranda State School has a unique program running where children are offered philosophy classes from grade 1. It is a public school towards the centre of Brisbane and has 214 students. The school offers alternative education methods including grouping children in ability level rather than in peer/age groups. It’s a fantastic model of newer theories in education and it is interesting to see them operate within a state school. They feature a strong environmental education program and also offer in-service programs for other educators and schools interested in considering philosophy as a primary-level subject. The alternative subjects are run as supplementary programs to the Board of Education curriculum requirements and not as a replacement.
