Buried Village - New Zealand

Some of you may not have known that there used to be an 8th wonder of the world and it was located in Rotorua.

The volcanic Mount Tarawera erupted over 120 years ago and destroyed the beautiful pink and white terraces.

It also wiped out a Wairoa village and a huge excavation is being done to unearth remnants of the village buried in the volcanic ash.

The site now exists as an expansive outdoor museum.

You can walk through the paths and wander through the excavation sites.

The most famous attraction is the town hotel which wasn’t directly destroyed by the volcano.

The cellar was full of whisky bottles, some of which are on display.

There are also excavations of dwellings, stone warehouses and workshops and several reconstructions.

Inside the main museum building, you can check out the displays of various objects.

The location of the site alone is reason enough to visit there.

While you get your history lesson, you can walk along the river and watch the trout swimming or just enjoy the lush flora and fauna.

There is also a decent sized waterfall.

Overall, it was a really great experience and not a typical museum by any means.

Admission Price is NZ $30 for adults and $8 for kids 5-15 years old.

The Buried Village is located 15 minutes from Rotorua by car.

There is a shuttle bus which goes there: Tim’s Shuttle Daily at 11.30am and 1.30pm. +64 27 494 5508
