![]() Diving in Tulamben Tulamben is a small village on the north east of Bali. This is the departure point for the most popular diving site in Bali, the USAT Liberty wreck. In 1942, this US Army transport ship was torpedoed by the Japanese. You don’t have to feel creeped out while exploring the wreck because no one was killed during the attack. The army had plans of salvaging the wreck for scrap and pulled the ship up to Tulamben beach. In 1963, Mt. Agung erupted and destroyed a lot of eastern Bali. The ship was driven back into the water. Because of this, the Liberty wreck is only in about 30 meters of water and 25 meters from the shore. This is a perfect diving spot for all levels. We dove there with Tulamben Wreck Divers because they seemed reputable and we could contact them via internet. However, there are lots of dive operators in the area catering to tourists. It is really interesting to peek into the port holes of the ship and you can even enter through the old entranceway. Everything is completely encrusted in coral and there are so many different species of marine life which can be seen at the wreck. Batfish, angelfish, and puffer fish are everywhere. There are also barracudas which are frequently spotted.
