Geothermal Park Wai-o-Tapu Thermal Wonderland

If you want to feel like you have been transported to a world from Jurassic Park, you need to visit the geothermal parks in Rotorua.

The most encompassing of all the parks is Wai-o-Tapu Thermal Wonderland.

The park is contains natural geysers, hot springs, bubbling mud pits, gigantic volcanic craters and things that you won’t believe until you see them.

Because of the sulfur in the area, there are amazing color formations around the hot pools.

The most popular one is Champagne which is a bright orangish colour that changes throughout its depths.

The ground literally steams in this place. I urge you to look at pictures, though they won’t begin to do justice the really awe.

The Lady Knox Geyser erupts every day at precisely 10:15 am. They actually add soap to the geyser in order to control its eruption.

It’s cheating but otherwise there would be no way to calculate when it would erupt. Though it is definitely spectacular, you may want to skip it.

The reason is because all of the park visitors will be there looking at the geyser and you can have the park all to yourself.

There are three different paths which connect to each other. If you aren’t a walker, you can just stick to the first loop.

There are 25 sites in all to see. Once you see the first few geothermal sights though, you will want to continue through the whole park!

Make sure you get there early. You can literally spend all day here in wonderment of the scenery.

If you actually want to get into some of the hot springs or take a rejuvenating mud bath, the Hell’s Gate Wairora Spa is fabulous and offers geothermal tours as well as spa treatments.

The colors aren’t as nice as at Wai-o-Tapu though.
