![]() While you are visiting the East Alligator region of Kakadu National Park, you must stop in at the Injalak Arts and Crafts Centre. It is located in Gunbalanya/Oenpelli, which is an aboriginal township. The setting is absolutely amazing, with deep gorges and amazing rock formations. You need to get a permit from the Northern Land Council to access the arts and crafts centre, but it is worth it the extra step. It only costs $13.50 and children are free. When you get there, you will see screen printing, paintings on paper and bark, weavings and beautiful didgeridoos. Plus, you will get to see the artists at work on the veranda and see how they grind the colors from scratch. You can take the Injalak Hill tour with the centre. They will take you through the area into some of the most beautiful black plains and wetlands. We saw so many different animals, like wallabies and goannas. The guides really know the area and have great stories to tell about the area. Our guide took us to sandstone caves which were the remains of Aboriginal homes and had rock paintings inside. This was the best tour in Kakadu that we went on and the tour that gave us the most insight into the region. You can drive there yourself but a 4WD vehicle may be necessary depending on the road conditions, especially in early May. There are a few tours which operate tours to Injalak. Because you must cross the East Alligator River, it is only possible to visit during the dry season from May to November.
