The lake was formed over 10,000 years ago by glacier movement and is Australia’s deepest lake.

Cradle Mountain in Lake St Clair National Park is beautiful enough be World Heritage listed. The cliffs around the lake are stunning. I personally like this national park over some of Australia’s other magnificent parks because Lake St Clair has trees. As great as those red rocks are in the outback, I like the smell of the woods! As a vacation destination, you will really be able to relax and enjoy yourself while at Lake St Clair. There are all sorts of walks to go on, fishing and boating tours. The most popular accommodation is camping though there are some luxury (and very expensive) resort spas in the park. The best time to visit is at the end of April. The trees turn beautiful colors and the weather is nice.

Cradle is the starting point for the world-famous Overland Track, a magnificent 6 day walk that will take you through the heart of some of the finest mountain terrain.

Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre

Located just inside the national park entrance, this centre provides visitors with a wide range of services that includes informative displays, an art gallery, videos and a welcoming log fire! Information officers provide advice on walks and activities. The centre is open daily from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm.
