Magnetic Bay - Queensland

You will love Magnetic Island because it is possible to completely lose yourself in the beauty of the place.

Two thirds of the island are protected as national parks. The island is 7 km by 5 km and has about 25 km of walking trails. There are many beaches and 23 separate bays where you can swim, fish, dive, do adrenaline sports, and many more activities.

There are only about 2000 residents in Magnetic Island, many of which cater to the tourists. Maggie Island is divided up into four areas: Picnic Bay, Nelly Bay, Arcadia and Horseshoe Bay. All areas of the island have something to offer. There is amazing wildlife and you can see Australia’s largest colony of koalas, wallabies, possums, and lots of birdlife.

There are also a lot of bugs which means there is a thriving lizard population. Don’t be surprised if you see lizards all over the place- including in your hotel room!

The best snorkeling is at Florence Beach and Radical, Horseshoe Bay and Arcadia are beautiful spots for swimming. It is easy to find a spot of beach for yourself if you are willing to walk for 15 minutes.

Magnetic Island is just 8 km from Townsville and you can take the ferry across. It takes about half an hour.

For $160 (two ways), you can bring your car to the island. If you are staying for a while, this is a good idea. Rentals on the island cost around $70 per day.
